ReplyDeleteThe civil war was known as the brothers war because it was brother fighting against brother. I chose this fact because we talked a little about it in class and it surprised me that actual brothers chose seperate sides and faught eachother.
ReplyDeleteThomas "Stonewall" Jackson habitually sucked on lemons, even during battle. I think it is interesting because he was a hardened miltary generaland he sucked on lemons. That must have been interesting to watch.

ReplyDeleteThere were not people, with cars because of the fact that there was not cars like we have today to drive around in. I find it funny because of the fact that now everyone is all big in their cars and its important to people that their car loooks nice.
ReplyDeleteAs many as 400 women disquised themselves as men to fight in the war. I thought this was cool because they felt so strongly that they wanted to fight along with the men, even though they were not allowed.
ReplyDeleteDuring the civil war, 300 women disguised themseleves as men and fought in the battles. This is interesting to me because I would never thought that women would do that or even want to fight in the war.
ReplyDeleteGeneral Stonewell Jackson walked around with his right hand in the air to balance the blood in his body he did this because his right hand was bigger than his left hand. I think this is interesting because lots of people have there hands or legs than the other one and noone does this today
ReplyDeleteSurgeons never washed their hands after an operation because they thought all blood was the same. I found this weird because today sanitation is such a big deal and so much research has gone into it. This probably led to A LOT of deaths.

ReplyDeleteOne amazing fact about the civil war is that women were not aloud to fight in the war but yert 3,000 or more were employed as nurses or medics. I chose this fact because today women are aloud to fight in the war and earn money for it.
ReplyDeletemen used a purse to carry their supplies.I find it funny because it was the women who carry purses today. Man purses at that time were called haversacks. I could not see my dad caring a purse!

Of the 364,000 on the Union side that died, a third were killed of died of wounds and two thirds died of disease. I find this interesting because today hardly any soldiers die of disease or illness.
ReplyDeleteAfter the Battle of Gettysburg, the discarded rifles were collected and sent to Washington to be inspected and reissued. of the 37.574 rifles approximately 24,000 were still loaded; 6,000 had one round in the barrel,12,000 had two rounds in the barrel, 6,000 had 3-10 rounds.One rifle, the most remarkable of all had been stuffed to the top with 23 rounds in the barrel. I find this interesting because the need for guns was so high that im surprised they inspected them instead of just getting grabbed. Also im surprised they were unloaded apparently?

While General Lee's army crossed the Potomac River, female onlookers were embarressed to see them, because many of the men only wore ragged underwear and trousers with equiptment held overhead. I found this funny because of the thought of female onlookers having to see that, but also found it sad, because the soldiers lost so much during battle.
ReplyDeleteDuring the civil war people wore glasses with colored lenses for illnesses or diseases. Yellow for syphilis, blue for craziness, and pink for depression. I thought this was really interesting because we are so much more advanced than before in how we treat people.
ReplyDeleteJulia Novotny: The Battle of Antietam was the single deadliest day in the Civil War with 23,000 casualties. I found this interesting because I had always thought of the Battle of Gettysburg as the deadliest day, but Gettysburg was actually the deadliest battle with more than 50,000 casualties.
ReplyDeleteSurgeons during the civil war era didn't wash their hands after curing their patient,because they thought all the blood was tyhe same. I thought this was intersting because it just shows how long we have come with our knowledge of medicines and the human body. We now know that their are differnt kinds of blood. If civil war surgeons knew this maybe it would reduce the spread of bacteria and disease.

I thought this was interesting that they had to widen the doors for that many dead people.
ReplyDeletewhen a child died, parents would have a photograph taken of the child. They wanted to preserve the memory for as long as possible. A lot of photographs taken of sleeping children are actually of deceased sons or daughters.

ReplyDeleteWest Virginia split away from being regular Virginia over the war. At first Virginia wanted to have slavery, but not all of the people there agreed that we should have slavery. So they ended out splitting away from Virginia. This caused family's to split because the father might have agreed about slavery but the mother might be against slavery.
ReplyDeleteThe chances of suriving a wound in the Civil War days was 7 to 1. I picked this fact because I thought it was interesting and a bit sad that only one person out the seven people survived if they got wounded. And also other people took my other fact about the sutgeons which goes along with the 7 to 1 people becuase if they got wounded and needed help they would get other peoples dirty blood into their blood stream, and eventaully spread through their body and kill them..
ReplyDeleteDid you know that during the war your chance of survival was 7-1. During the Korean war it was 50-1. i thought it was interesting because it shows that it was our countries deadliest war.

ReplyDelete• On July 4, 1863, after 48 days of siege, Confederate General John C. Pemberton surrendered the city of Vicksburg to the Union’s General, Ulysses S. Grant. The Fourth of July was not be celebrated in Vicksburg for another 81 years.

At the battle of Chancellorsville in 1863, general jackson died. He died because his own men shot him because they thought he was an enemy.

Before I found this out I thought they just made them big for no reason.

ReplyDeleteDuring the era of Queen Victoria, the dead were placed in their parlors or bedrooms. Funeral homes didn't exist. The bodies stayed in the house until they were later buried. I picked this fact because I can't picture people today laying their dead loved ones on their beds until burial. It especially surprises me that they would do that with people who were in battle since they had gruesome wounds and injuries. I can't imagine the smell.

There were 6,000,000 cases of diseases in the Federal armies, that meant, on an average, every man was sick at least twice. I chose this fact cause i thought it was interesting that there was that many different cases of disease in the armies.

ReplyDeleteDisease was the number one killer during the war, taking two men for every one who died of battle injuries. I think this is interesting the people died because of disease, not because of the war
The principal weapon of the war and the one by which 80 percent of all wounds were produced was a single-shot, muzzle-loading rifle in the hands of foot soldiers.I found this interesting because we have more of a varity of weapons. Even though it was a long time ago, we've improved greatly.

ReplyDeleteThe Armies of the Civil War were made up of 9% draftees, 1% the actual U.S. Army and 90% of the Norht and South armies were volunteers. I thought this fact was interesting because of all the people from both the Union and Confederacy united for a common cause.
